Who doesn’t like a good puzzle? The thrill of trying to figure it out and the euphoria that comes from finally solving it. It can be a tricky 1000-piece puzzle that you are putting together with your grandmother or maybe getting retro with a classic Rubix cube.

In technology, there are always puzzles. How do I get to the next level on this game? How did that meme become so popular on Reddit? Why does my code work now when it didn’t before, and I didn’t change anything? All good mental workouts.

In the tech business we love solving puzzling, and difficult, problems for our clients. One of our Sydney clients created a database of all their business listings in Filemaker which is a software by Apple. They wanted to keep managing everything in Filemaker while they also wanted their customers to be able to access this data online using web interface. Not exactly IKEA flatpack technology, and luckily no Alan key in sight.

We put our thinking caps on and suggested creating a web application for them where brokers and clients would have a separate login to access only a fraction of data. A small program synchronises data between the two systems. We patted ourselves on the back for a little while before having to get the cleaners over because we blew their minds! Or more seriously, we had to build it.

As a result, customers can access data from mobile phones and tablets and the business is still able to manage everything from the Filemaker interface using their desktop computer. It was like finding the final puzzle piece and admiring the pretty landscape it showed.
