Despite what you might think, those of use behind the scenes of the IT world are not magicians. There are blood and bone people behind the curtain of the wizard. I know that some of the things people in our field do are amazing, but it takes a lot of hours to get as good as we are.

Still, many see the extreme fetes that people do and think, “It must be magic, what is that? I want some of that.” It’s hard to tell people that their simple web idea might be impossible when Elon Musk is sending his car to Mars.

Can you ask the seemingly impossible of us? Absolutely! Will we always be able to solve it? Legally I can’t say yes but our lawyer has said that I can say “we will come to a satisfactory solution that will make both parties happy.” Lawyers can be such kill-joys sometimes.

I’ll give you an example of something extraordinary that we were asked to do. A wedding photographer from Pyrmont asked if it was possible to send photos to a company Instagram automatically without using the Instagram app.

When you first look at the problem you think, “This has to be possible.” Then you must consider how top secret an organization like Instagram is. We couldn’t just knock on their door and ask for this kind of access. We were going to have to think outside of the box. Luckily, “outside the box” was also the solution.

We created a web application that pretended to be an Android phone with the Instagram app. That way photos could be sent to their growing Instagram page without manual processing. That’s the kind of solution where you want to stand up and drop a microphone. We don’t do that, because we are professional, but inside we do say “Booya” a lot.
